House fire leaves child, 6, critical

January 2, 2019

A 6-year-old child was critically injured in a New Year’s Day fire that heavily damaged a Taylor Street home.

A pedestrian who noticed the fire approached the home and broke out a first-floor window to pull an adult woman to safety before firefighters arrived, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said in a news release Tuesday.

Firefighters were called about 4:15 a.m. to the 1300 block of Taylor and found heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the first floor, where the kitchen was located, the release said.

The firefighters found the 6-year-old on the second floor. The child was taken to a local hospital.

The fire, which was controlled within 40 minutes, remains under investigation. Fort Wayne police, American Electric Power, Neighborhood Code Enforcement, the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority, Northern Indiana Public Service Co. and the American Red Cross assisted.
