Police in Roanoke Rapids are investigating after two masked suspects robbed a convenience store and shot an employee.

On Wednesday at 12:45 a.m., officers responded to the New Dixie Mart on Julian Allsbrook Highway.

Store employees told police that two armed suspects entered the store and demanded money.

According to police, during the robbery, one of the suspects jumped over the counter while the other suspect ran behind the counter.

The suspects then demanded the employees open the safe. When the employees told them they did not have access to the safe, one of the suspects struck one of the employees in the head with a handgun.

The suspects took money and cigarettes and, while exiting the store, one of the suspects turned around and shot one of the employees.

Police say the suspects then fled on foot toward down Hamilton Street towards Clinton Street and got into an unknown car.

The employee who was shot was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center, where he was in surgery Wednesday morning.
