Maryland 61, No. 9 N.C. St. 48
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ Stephanie Cross scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half and Maryland avenged a pair of regular-season losses to North Carolina State with a 61-48 victory over the ninth-ranked Wolfpack in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament Friday night.
Sonia Chase added 19 points and Kalisa Davis had 15 to help the Terrapins (15-12) advance to Saturday’s semifinals against No. 16 Clemson, an 85-68 winner over Florida State.
N.C. State (21-6) had swept Maryland in the regular season by a combined 30 points, but the Wolfpack shot 36 percent Friday night and had seven second-half turnovers that the Terrapins converted into eight points.
Chasity Melvin, N.C. State’s best scorer and rebounder, struggled much of the night and finished with 15 points and five rebounds in 25 minutes.
Maryland had a 40-32 rebounding edge, led by 12 from Chase and 10 from Cross.
N.C. State was down by eight when Melvin picked up her fourth personal with 18:21 left and went to the bench, and the Wolfpack rallied for a 37-36 lead before falling behind again.
Cross had seven points in an 11-4 run that put Maryland up 49-43 by the time Melvin came back in with 6:05 remaining.
The Wolfpack cut it to 51-47 on a short jumper by Melvin at the 3:33 mark, but did not get another field goal the rest of the way.
Maryland sealed it by making six of eight foul shots in the last 56 seconds.
Maryland held N.C. State to one field goal over the last five minutes of the first half, clearing the way for the Terrapins to build a five-point lead heading into the final 20 minutes.
