Alleged Child Abductor Arrives
CHICAGO (AP) _ A woman accused of taking a toddler from a bus station Christmas Eve arrived Wednesday in Chicago to face federal kidnapping charges.
Federal marshals escorted Sheila Matthews from West Virginia, where she was arrested Dec. 27.
She was to appear Thursday before a magistrate judge, who could set a bond hearing.
Authorities say she went to the Greyhound bus terminal in Chicago looking for a baby to abduct and claim was her own. She allegedly offered a ride to Marcella Anderson and her two daughters, then disappeared with the woman’s 16-month-old while Anderson waited in a ticket line.
Authorities say Matthews took the child to cover up a story she told her boyfriend _ that she had his baby while he was in prison.
If convicted, Matthews could be sentenced to life in prison.
