JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ Ron Harrist, who has worked for The Associated Press in Jackson for more than three decades, has been promoted to news editor.

The appointment was announced Tuesday by Mississippi Chief of Bureau Frank Fisher.

Harrist joined the AP in 1968 in Jackson. He became state editor in the mid-1970s, while Jackson was still a correspondency, and he continued in that capacity when the state was elevated to bureau status in 1996.

Harrist, 56, was born in Tampa, Fla., and grew up in east Texas. He is a graduate of Mississippi College in Clinton and worked for The (Jackson) Clarion-Ledger before joining the AP.
