5 Die in Ivory Coast Fish Clashes
ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) _ Feuding between rival fishing communities in the Ivory Coast has escalated into violent clashes that in recent days have left five dead, a newspaper reported Monday.
Armed with rifles and machetes, members of the Neyo tribe in the Ivory Coast have been battling with rival fishermen from Ghana, who live in the Ivorian town Sassandra, the French-language daily Fraternite Matin reported.
The clashes began more than a week ago after Neyo villagers spotted a dead body floating off the coast. At least five Ghanian fishermen were killed and 27 Ghanian and Neyo villagers were wounded, the newspaper reported.
Sassandra, near the Liberian border, is an important fishing port, attracting crews from Ghana, Liberia and the Ivory Coast.
