Francis, Brand Share Rookie Award?
HOUSTON (AP) _ Steve Francis of the Houston Rockets and Elton Brand of the Chicago Bulls reportedly will share the NBA’s Rookie of the Year Award.
The two players tied in the voting for the award, which will be announced Thursday.
The winners were reported by the Houston Chronicle, Chicago Tribune and CNN/SI.
Francis and Brand would be the third pair of rookies to share the award following Jason Kidd and Grant Hill in 1994-95 and Dave Cowens and Geoff Petrie in 1970-71.
Francis became just the seventh rookie to average at least 15 points, five assists and five rebounds, joining Oscar Robertson, Alvan Adams, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Penny Hardaway and Hill.
Francis was fifth in scoring among point guards. He led all guards in offensive rebounds and was third among guards in rebounding overall.
Brand, the Bulls’ center, led all rookies in minutes, scoring, rebounding and blocks. He led the NBA in offensive rebounds with 4.3 a game.
