Bulls Waive Anthony Before Deadline

March 2, 2002

CHICAGO (AP) _ The Chicago Bulls waived Greg Anthony on Friday afternoon, clearing the way for the veteran guard to sign with a playoff contender.

He must first clear waivers before signing with another team.

Anthony, in his 11th year, asked the Bulls to waive him by Friday so he could be eligible for the postseason. Chicago was 15-42 going into Friday night’s game against the Washington Wizards.

``We were able to reach an amicable agreement on his contract for next year and thus, accommodate him,″ said Jerry Krause, the Bulls’ general manager. ``We hate to lose him as a player and a person.″

Anthony started 35 games for Chicago and his scoring average of 8.4 points is his highest since 1996-97. He also was averaging a team-high 5.6 assists.

But the Bulls are loaded at guard, making it easy to let Anthony go. Chicago received Travis Best in a seven-player deal with Indiana last month, and A.J. Guyton is averaging 6.9 points and 2.2 assists in 16.6 minutes a game.

Jamal Crawford is also expected back soon. Crawford has missed most of the season after surgery to repair torn knee ligaments.
