Portion of East 55th Street in Cleveland closing due to leaking water main

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A heavily traveled portion of East 55th Street in Cleveland will be closed to traffic after Friday evening’s rush hour and will remain closed at least through the weekend and possibly into next week.

The reason: a leak on a 30-inch water main under East 55th Street at the intersection of Scovill Avenue.

East 55th between Woodland and Quincy avenues will be closed at 7 p.m. Friday. Crews won’t know how long it will remain closed until they determine how bad the leak is, Cleveland Division of Water Commissioner Alex Margevicius said.

Northbound drivers are being directed around the closure by traveling on Woodland Avenue to East 40th Street to Quincy Avenue; southbound drivers should travel to Quincy Avenue, East 71st Street and then Woodland Avenue.

A few weeks ago, workers found water running inside underground pipes carrying utility wires in the area. The city’s water department looked into the issue, and found the leak on the 30-inch main, Margevicius said.

Now that crews have identified the leak’s location and shut down water flow, they must excavate under East 55th to determine whether they need to make a simple fix or more substantial repairs.

If it is a simple fix, Margevicius anticipates a few lanes of East 55th Street reopening by Monday morning. If not, repairs could continue well into next week.
