Avalanche kills Swiss skier in Indian Kashmir
SRINAGAR, India (AP) — An Indian official says an avalanche has killed a Swiss tourist who was skiing in the Himalayas in Indian-held Kashmir.
Local official Tariq Ganai says two other tourists were rescued hours after the avalanche struck Friday.
He says the three decided to go skiing, ignoring a warning that the area was unsafe because of bad weather.
The area is in Gulmarg region, 55 kilometers (35 miles) northwest of Srinagar, Kashmir’s main city.
Avalanches and landslides are common in Kashmir, which is divided between India and neighboring Pakistan.
