Lightning Kills Man, Sheep at Madrid Zoo

October 3, 1994

MADRID, Spain (AP) _ A bolt of lightning struck a children’s zoo Sunday afternoon in Madrid, killing one man and injuring five other people.

Miguel Angel Luna, 28, died of respiratory failure on the way to the hospital, the state-run news agency EFE reported. His wife and child were also hit by the lightning and were hospitalized for observation.

Three others also were hospitalized, including 23-year-old Jorge Cubillo Rodriguez, who was standing near Luna when he was hit and reportedly fell into a coma.

Two of the petting zoo’s sheep were also killed by the bolt.

It wasn’t raining when the lightning struck, but zoo workers told EFE they heard thunder.
