Drexel 70, St. Mary’s, Calif. 64, OT
NEW YORK (AP) _ Michael Thompson broke a 64-64 tie when he rebounded his own missed shot and scored with 1:37 left in overtime, and Drexel rallied from 14 down in the second half for a 70-64 victory Friday over St. Mary’s, Calif., in the first round of the Joe Lapchick Memorial tournament.
The Dragons (1-1) will meet the winner of the UNC-Wilmington-St. John’s game in Saturday’s final. The host Redmen have won the tournament 16 straight years.
After Thompson’s basket, Clarence Armstrong and Jonathan Raab each scored a pair of free throws to complete the scoring.
Thurman Watson of St. Mary’s, who finished with 18 points, sent the game into overtime at 61-61 with a 3-point goal with 7 seconds left.
Martell Bland added 12 points for the Gaels (1-1).
Thompson led four Drexel players in double figures. Armstrong had 14, one more than Raab. Dan Leahy had 11.
St. Mary’s scored the first 7 points of the second half for a 39-26 lead. The Gaels had their biggest lead, 46-32, on Bland’s 3-pointer with 14:57 to play. The Dragons then went on a 19-6 run for a 53-52 lead, its first, on Dan Leahy’s two free throws with 5:38 left.
A 3-pointer and one of two foul shots, all by Armstrong, put Drexel up 61-58 with 20 seconds to play. Watson then hit his 3-pointer for overtime.
