NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets have fired general manager Mike Maccagnan (mak-KAG’-nan), who oversaw the Jets’ draft less than three weeks ago. Coach Adam Gase will serve as the acting GM in his place. The stunning decision by team chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson was announced in a statement posted today on the team’s Twitter account. Johnson says he made the move after assessing what would be in the Jets’ best interests.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have placed catcher Mitch Garver on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left ankle. He was injured last night tagging out Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) as he tried to score the tying run in Minnesota’s 4-3 win over the Angels. The Twins returned Miguel Sanó from his rehabilitation assignment after cutting his right heel in January.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The owners of Maximum Security have sued the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and race stewards, seeking to reverse the horse’s disqualification as Kentucky Derby winner and restore purse money. The lawsuit filed in federal court by Gary and Mary West claims the stewards relied on insubstantial evidence. Maximum Security crossed the finish line first on May 4 before being disqualified for impeding the paths of several horses. Runner-up Country House, a 65-1 shot, was elevated to first.

BALTIMORE (AP) — A 13th horse has been added to the Preakness field three days before the race. Everfast, trained by Dale Romans, was a last-minute entry to the second jewel of the Triple Crown today, hours before post positions were drawn. If all 13 horses reach the starting gate, it’ll be the biggest Preakness field since 2009.

ROME (AP) — Play at the Italian Open has been wiped out by rain. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) will have to wait until tomorrow to play their opening matches at the clay-court tournament. Top-ranked Naomi Osaka was also scheduled to play today. Better weather is forecast for tomorrow and Friday.
