No. 17 Minnesota 90, Northwestern 72
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) _ Willie Burton scored 21 points to lead five Minnesota starters in double figures Saturday night as the 17th-ranked Gophers used a second-half surge to beat Big Ten rival Northwestern 90-72.
The Gophers (17-6, 8-5) broke open a tight game with a 17-2 run for a 48-34 lead early in the second half after the Wildcats had scored four of the first six points to take their last lead at 32-31.
Kevin Lynch had 17 points for the Gophers. Melvin Newbern added 13 and Richard Coffey and Jim Shikenjanski each had 12.
Rex Walters led Northwestern (8-15 and 1-12) with 18 and Walker Lambiotte finished with 15.
Minnesota grabbed an early 9-2 lead with four different starters scoring, but the Wildcats came back with an 11-2 run, capped by Lambiotte’s basket, to take their only lead of the first half.
A 3-pointer by Lynch put the Gophers back in front, but the Gophers weren’t able to break away. Walters’ 3-pointer tied it at 22 but a 3-pointer by Burton put Minnesota back in front and the Gophers led 29-28 at the half.
