Oprah to Appear at UMass Lowell
LOWELL -- Oprah Winfrey will grace the stage of the Tsongas Center this Thursday as part of UMass Lowell’s Chancellor Speaker Series.
Winfrey is the third featured speaker of this annual event, following author Stephen King and actress Meryl Streep.
UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacquie Moloney will host the event and interview Winfrey on stage in front of the audience. The talk show host, producer, author and actress is also known for her tremendous philanthropy. Moloney said she hopes Winfrey will instill a message of hope to the attendees, especially students who, like Winfrey, may have humble beginnings.
Just like the speakers before her, Winfrey’s appearance will help raise money for UMass Lowell student scholarships. More than $100,000 was raised from King’s appearance, and Streep’s appearance garnered more than $230,000. Moloney said the goal is to raise $1 million in scholarship money from this week’s event, dubbed “A Conversation with Oprah Winfrey.”
Winfrey will also be presented with an honorary doctorate of humane letters from UMass Lowell. This is the highest honor the university can bestow.
The event begins at 7 p.m. and few tickets remain. For more information, visit www.tsongascenter.com or call 866-722-8780.
