Mercer to debut mobile kitchen for child learning

December 29, 2018

Children participating in the Winter Children’s Camp at Mercer Botanic Gardens are in for a real treat as Charlie Cart comes through to teach them about cooking with vegetables.

Mercer will present the Charlie Cart from Jan. 2- Jan. 4 during the Winter Children’s Camp.

The Charlie Cart Projet is an integrated educational program that connects food and cooking with lessons in math, english, language arts, science and social studies.

The Charlie Cart comes with a convection oven and induction cooktop, a stainless steel rinse station and smallwares such as whisks, peelers and measuring utensils.

The Mercer education staff plans on using the Charlie Cart to teach children about nutrition and how to make healthy food choices. Children will learn where the food comes from and how it moves from the garden to the table.

Beginning in January, Mercer will also host a recurring Cooking Thyme program at 10 a.m. on select Wednesdays.

Cooking Thyme is a free hands-on program that equips children with the knowledge to make their own healthy meals.

Classes for third through fifth graders begin Jan 16. and classes for kindergarten through second grade will begin Feb.6.

Reservations are required.
