Wyoming museum facing winter closure

February 27, 2018

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — The Fort Casper Museum in central Wyoming may close during the winter months to save money.

The museum at Casper is currently open year round.

But city Parks and Recreation Director Tim Cortez explained to about 40 people who gathered last week about the museum’s future that the city needs to reduce its spending because of uncertainty about funding from the state.

Cortez said the city is considering keeping the museum open from the beginning of April to the end of October. That would save about $167,000.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports multiple speakers opposed closing the facility during the winter months.

About 25,000 people annually visit the museum, which features a reconstructed 1865 military post and exhibits on prehistoric people, Plains Indians, ranching, the energy industry and frontier Army life.
