Quilts That Were To Be Displayed at Inaugural Stolen
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Two quilts made by a 76-year-old woman for display during President-elect Clinton’s inauguration were stolen just before the woman was to leave for Washington, D.C.
Police said Arbie Williams and her daughter, Juanita Parker, were loading their car Friday morning when the man stole the vehicle, which contained the quilts and their luggage.
Parker told police she had left the car’s engine running and the man jumped in and drove off.
Williams, who has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts for her quilts, had made two for the inauguration’s arts festival. She’ll display another quilt at the festival.
