Puerto Rico Paper Claims Sabotage
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) _ This island’s only English-language newspaper claimed that sabotage forced delays in printing two editions this week.
In a full-page explanation to readers Tuesday, San Juan Star publisher Gerry Angulo said saboteurs put glue in pressroom equipment, clogged a tube feeding ink to the press and damaged the press’ electronic equipment.
Angulo said police were investigating the damage, but he did not speculate as to who may have caused it. He did not return calls Tuesday.
The San Juan Star recently laid off about 30 temporary workers, many of them translators for the newspaper’s Spanish-language edition. Rival newspapers reported the Star also eliminated one shift in the pressroom.
Last year, company officials claimed someone tried to sabotage equipment in the newspaper’s mailroom and accused rival newspaper carriers of throwing bundles of the Star into garbage bins.
