Marauders, Zabala outscore T-birds 41-20
BULLHEAD CITY — Senior quarterback Antoine Zabala accounted for all six of the Mingus High School Marauders touchdowns in a 41-20 win over the host T-birds at Mohave High School on Friday night.
“I thought our boys played tough,” Mohave head coach Rudy Olvera said. “We’ve just got to minimize mistakes.”
After a fumbled Mohave snap gave Mingus the ball in T-birds’ territory, Mingus made it 7-0 lead on a 14-yard pass from Zabala to Fabian Jimenez.
Mohave tied it on Will Robinzine’s 1-yard run with 2:52 left in the first quarter.
Zabala threw a 21-yard TD pass to Ray Kaehler in the quarter’s waning seconds to make it 14-7. Then Zabala hit Mardquez Mestas from 11 yards out to make it 21-7.
Robinzine’s 1-yard TD run made it 21-13 at the half.
Mingus’ first drive of the second half ended with Zabala’s 1-yard sneak, making it 28-13.
About four minutes later, Zabala’s 41-yard TD pass to Christian Bay made it 35-13.
Mohave seemed to get back in it on a 61-yard TD pass from Brent Moore to Perez-Velasco, which made it 35-20.
“Mohave wants to out-physical you — to run the ball right down your throat,” Mingus head coach Robert Ortiz said. “They run all night and if one guy falls asleep, there’s a pass right
The 2-4, 0-2 in region T-birds had seemed to stop the ensuing possession, but Julio Robles was flagged for roughing the passer.
“That was a good play,” Olvera said. “He had him in the grasp the whole time. It’s terrible that (the officials) would call something like that, when we’re dealing with teenagers.”
Then Zabala threw an 18-yard TD pass to Kendrew Streck.
Moore said that to get the outcome they want, the T-birds will have to be sharper on defense, and eliminate mistakes and execute better on offense. “All the blocking needs to get better,” he said. “This upcoming week of practice is gonna be a hard one for people who don’t wanna block.”
