54 More S. Leone Hostages Released

May 21, 2000

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) _ Sierra Leonean Rebels released 54 U.N. personnel after holding them hostage for nearly three weeks, a U.N. official said Sunday.

The group was flown by helicopter from the Liberian border town of Foya on Sunday, said U.N. spokesman David Wimhurst, and brought to Freetown by plane a few hours later. The Revolutionary United Front still holds at least 280 U.N. peacekeepers captive inside the Sierra Leone.
