National Merit semifinalists announced for 2019: See the Ohio list

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Narrowed down from a pool of about 1.6 million, the list of year’s National Merit semifinalists has arrived.

There are about 16,000 semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. That represents less than one percent of high school seniors. Semifinalists qualify through their PSAT scores.

After the initial testing process, students submit applications detailing their academic record and extracurriculars. They also must submit essays, get a recommendation from a school official and get qualifying SAT scores.

About 15,000 are expected to advance to finalist status. Finalists have the opportunity to win one of about 7,500 scholarships, a pool of money totaling around $31 million.

Finalists will be notified in February. Scholarships will be announced beginning in April.
