Snow cancels St. Michael’s tournament

December 30, 2018

St. Michael’s High School announced Friday that it canceled the last two days of its Lady Horsemen Christmas Tournament after a snowstorm slammed Santa Fe.

St. Michael’s cited safety concerns for players and fans getting to the games and the impact of more snow.

The tournament will not be made up. The decision takes away two games from St. Michael’s, Monte del Sol, Española Valley, Pecos, Mesa Vista, Taos, Cobre and Albuquerque Sandia Prep.

“It just wouldn’t make sense,” St. Michael’s girls head coach Martin Esquibel said. “It’s something that was beyond our control.”

The Jalene Berger Allstate Holiday Hoops Classic at Rio Rancho also canceled games because of poor road conditions. That affected the Española Valley boys team, although the Española Public Schools had already elected not to take the Sundevils to Rio Rancho for Thursday’s first-round game.

The Stu Clark Tournament had to make a last-minute change after Santa Rosa couldn’t make it to Las Vegas, N.M., because of snow-packed roads. Las Vegas Robertson’s junior varsity took its place.
