Glendale police officer shoots, kills escaped inmate

August 1, 2018

PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities have released the name of an escaped inmate who was fatally shot by a Glendale police officer in south Phoenix.

Glendale police say 23-year-old Skyler Martin left a supervised Arizona Department of Corrections work crew at the Maricopa County Animal Shelter in February.

He had been serving a 7 1/2 year sentence for aggravated DUI.

Glendale police say officers were working in conjunction with a U.S. Marshals task force when the shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon.

Officers and marshals had surrounded a house and tried to contact Martin, but he fled and fired several rounds at a Glendale K9 unit officer who wasn’t hit.

The officer shot Martin several times and the escaped inmate was declared dead at the scene.

The police dog was shot and wounded during the exchange.
