Possible funding reprieve for British basketball
LONDON (AP) — Britain is reviewing its policy of only giving Olympic funding to sports with a chance of winning medals, offering a reprieve to the country’s basketball teams.
UK Sport, the body that distributes government and lottery cash to Olympic sports, is launching a consultation process with a view to changing its medal-focused criteria for the funding cycle from 2016 through 2020.
British basketball will receive no funding in the run-up to the Rio de Janiero Olympics in 2016 after having an allocation of 7 million pounds (then $11.6 million) withdrawn in February.
Britain’s men’s and women’s teams won only one of 10 games at the London Games in 2012.
British basketball chiefs say the sport has a bigger grassroots base than any other British Olympic team sport.
