WASHINGTON (AP) _ Cheryl Ford matched her season high with 18 rebounds and scored 14 points as the Detroit Shock defeated the Washington Mystics 76-62 Thursday night.
Elaine Powell added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Shock (7-7), who took control with a 10-0 run late in the second half and ended a two-game losing streak. Detroit closed the game with a 17-9 spurt.
Chasity Melvin had 14 points and Alana Beard 12 for the Mystics (8-8).
The Mystics tied a team record with 10 blocked shots, including four by Melvin. The last time Washington blocked 10 shots was July 28, 2004, also against Detroit.
After Deanna Nolan blocked Beard’s driving layup, Ford made consecutive layups to give the Shock a 61-53 lead with 5:40 left.
Rookie Temeka Johnson scored seven points during the Mystics’ 11-4 spurt in the first half for a 31-27 lead.
Ford, who had 10 rebounds in the first half, scored five points and Swin Cash added four as the Shock responded with a 9-2 surge for a 36-33 lead at the break. Cash, playing her second game since missing the first dozen with a left knee injury, finished with eight points and four assists.
Ruth Riley scored the Shock’s first six points of the second half. At the other end, Beard converted a dazzling drive and hit a 3-pointer before Melvin’s layup and three-point play gave the Mystics a 46-42 lead.
Kara Braxton scored six straight points to gave Detroit a 57-51 lead with 7:21 remaining.
The Mystics shot 44.8 percent to the Shock’s 34.4 percent in the first half, but Detroit grabbed 24 rebounds to Washington’s 10.
