One Dead, Three Youths and Police Officer Injured During Fight
EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y. (AP) _ An off-duty New York City police officer shot and killed a man and wounded three teen-agers who attacked him in his yard with a baseball bat Sunday when he tried to stop a fight, authorities said.
The fight broke out at a party next door to officer Kris Brandt’s house and spilled into his yard about 1:20 a.m., police said.
Brandt saw someone being beaten with a bat, went to help, and some members of the crowd turned on him, striking him with the bat, said Salvatore Yovino, a spokesman for the Suffolk County Police Department.
Brandt then fired four shots.
Joseph Buonavita, 19, of East Northport, died of a gunshot wound to the chest, police said.
An unidentified teen-ager underwent surgery at Huntington Hospital and was listed in stable condition. Two others received minor wounds.
Brandt was in stable condition at St. John’s Hospital with a severe head wound, broken ribs, cuts and bruises, police said.
