New portion of Pufferbelly Trail opens
With flying snowflakes, a brisk wind and a temperature of 21 degrees as a backdrop, a group of more than three dozen officials and trail enthusiasts gathered this morning to dedicate a crucial piece of the Pufferbelly Trail in Fort Wayne.
The two-mile stretch links Washington Center Road and Wallen Road. The dedication ceremony took place at the trail’s southern end just east of Cookie Cottage.
Dawn Ritchie, the city’s trails and greenways manager, said the stretch along a former railroad right of way will allow residents of the city’s north side to walk, run or cycle from a spot near their homes to downtown and numerous other destinations.
“More than 3,700 residents live within a half mile of this trail,” she said.
Fort Wayne Trails presented Mayor Tom Henry with a check for $219,792 towards trail development at today’s ribbon cutting.
