One person dead in bus crash near Baraboo
A Baraboo man was pronounced dead Monday morning after a school bus crashed into a vehicle near Baraboo.
The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office reported that there were no children inside the bus when it crashed into a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander that was pulling out of the Whitetail Crossing gas station and smoke shop next to the Ho-Chunk Casino.
Authorities were called to the scene at around 6:31 a.m., Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister said in a news release.
A preliminary investigation showed that the Mitsubishi was turning left to head south out of the store’s parking lot when it was struck by a Kobussen school bus that was heading north on County Highway BD.
“The operator of the Mitsubishi was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sauk County Coroner’s Office,” Meister said in the release.
Chief Deputy Jeff Spencer said the bus runs routes for the Baraboo School District, and likely was on its way to its morning pickups when the crash occurred.
An obituary submitted to the Baraboo News Republic from Redlin Funeral Home identified the victim as Francis Gonzagowski, 84, of Baraboo.
The crash remains under investigation.
