Woman accused of faking rape now faces fraud case

DETROIT (AP) — An eastern Michigan woman who raised money by telling people she had cancer has been charged with fraud, just days after being charged with making a false report of rape.

Sara Ylen (WY’-len) was charged Monday with health care fraud and crimes based on false pretenses. Sanilac County chief assistant prosecutor Brenda Sanford says Michigan State Police couldn’t corroborate Ylen’s claim that she had cancer.

It’s unknown whether the 38-year-old Lexington woman has an attorney.

Ylen’s credibility has been under scrutiny. She was charged last week in St. Clair County with making a false report of rape in September.

In a different case, a man convicted of raping Ylen was released from prison after nearly 10 years after authorities learned she had made up rape allegations in California.
