US: Drone spotted near Newark Liberty International Airport
NEWARK, New Jersey (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration says crews on four commercial flights spotted a drone while prepping for landing at Newark Liberty International Airport over the weekend.
NJ.com reports (http://bit.ly/1MfelB9 ) none of the pilots were required to make evasive maneuvers as a result of Sunday’s drone sighting. The planes were between up to 3,000 feet (915 meters) in the air and as near as 8 miles (12 kilometers) from the airport.
The FAA says it has received a significant increase in reports of drones flying nearby planes as they have become a more popular item.
The FAA says flying a drone “anywhere near” an airplane can bring criminal charges and fines up to $25,000.
