GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) _ A South American jaguar attacked and killed an employee Sunday at the John Ball Park Zoo, authorities said.

The zoo, open year-round, was closed after the attack on Gail Booth, said Duncan Valentine, a city spokesman.

Zoo workers and city police carrying tranquilizer guns isolated the jaguar after the incident, Valentine said. He did not say whether the animal was shot and refused to answer reporters' questions at an impromptu news conference.

Police said they had no details on the incident, and zoo Director Charles Wickenhauser has an unlisted phone number and could not be reached for comment.

The victim's age and hometown were not disclosed.
