Lawmakers urged to consider abortion rights bill immediately

June 29, 2018

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Abortion rights supporters are calling for lawmakers to reconvene and approve legislation that would keep abortion legal in Rhode Island even if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Protesters gathered outside the Statehouse Thursday night to demand a special session of the General Assembly to consider the Reproductive Health Care Bill.

The measure was filed two years ago, but a legislative leader said it wasn’t necessary because of the federal protections already in place. But the announcement this week that Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy will retire has raised the prospect that an even more conservative court could move to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Rep. Aaron Regunberg, a Providence Democrat who is co-sponsoring the bill, says Rhode Island lawmakers should act before it’s too late.
