Flash floods trigger evacuation of businesses in Derry

September 19, 2018

DERRY, N.H. (AP) — Heavy rains in southern New Hampshire resulted in the evacuation of several businesses in Derry.

Officials say four businesses were evacuated Tuesday, and more than a dozen people were removed safely. WMUR-TV reports the flooding was caused by a local drainage system getting overwhelmed.

Kathy Needham says she was on her way to work when she was told to turn around and go home. Officials say more than a dozen cars became trapped in water up to the headlights.

The row of businesses and the road where they were located remained closed until water levels receded.
