1975 OPEC Attack Suspect Extradited
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) _ A suspect in a deadly 1975 terrorist attack at OPEC headquarters was extradited Thursday from France to face murder and kidnapping charges in Germany.
Hans-Joachim Klein, a German citizen arrested in France in September after 23 years on the run, arrived at Frankfurt airport Thursday night and was brought directly to a holding cell, said Job Tillmann, spokesman for the Frankfurt prosecutor’s office. He was to appear before a judge on Friday.
Klein, a former leftist radical, faces charges in Germany stemming from the attack at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries headquarters in Vienna, Austria, in which 70 people were taken hostage and three people were killed. Germany commonly tries its own citizens for crimes committed in other countries.
French officials said Klein did not oppose extradition.
Orders for the attack are believed to have come from Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, the man known as ``Carlos the Jackal,″ who is in a French jail serving a life term for a triple murder in another case.
Austria is also seeking Klein’s return.
