Raceland wins 63rd District baseball crown

LLOYD, Ky. — Raceland won its first 63rd District title since 2002 on Tuesday, defeating Lewis County 8-1 in high school baseball at Greenup County High School.

The Rams scored three runs, two on Braydon Shore’s single, in the first inning. With the aid of four bunts, Raceland scored three more in the fourth as Hunter Lacks singled home a run, Jake Heighton bunted in another and a run scored when Brayden Kelly hit into a fielder’s choice.

In the sixth, Seth Mills drove in a run to make it 7-0. In the bottom of the inning, Matt Sparks’ single pulled the Lions within 7-1.

Lacks drove in a run in the seventh to set the score and make a winner of Jake Heighton.

SCOTT 11, POINT PLEASANT 7: The Skyhawks took an early lead and held off the Big Blacks to even their series 1-1 in the Class AA, Region IV tournament at Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The teams meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Madison, West Virginia, to determine the champion.


BOYD COUNTY 1, ASHLAND 0: Bailey Conley threw a shutout to lead the Lions over the Kittens in the 64th District championship game. Graci Borders scored the lone run on a fielder’s choice hit into by Olivia Mulhearn.

LEWIS COUNTY 12, RACELAND 9: The Lions rallied to beat the Rams and win their first 63rd District championship. Raceland led 7-6 before Alanna Puente and Kayla Sullivan hit back-to-back home runs with two out to give Lewis County a lead it never relinquished.

Monday’s baseball

RACELAND 10, GREENUP COUNTY 0: Hunter Lacks and Braydon Shore homered to lead the Rams (29-7) to a triumph over the defending champion Musketeers (10-21) in the Kentucky 63rd District semifinals. Raceland advanced to meet Lewis County in the finals. Shore also drove in two with a double and finished 2 for 3. Michael Sammons was 2 for 2 and winning pitcher Kirk Pence struck out seven.

POINT PLEASANT 1, SCOTT 0: Tanner Mitchell singled home Wyatt Wilson in the top of the fifth inning to give the Big Blacks (23-7) a victory over the Skyhawks (25-6) in the first game of a best-of-three series for the Class AA, Region IV championship. Sophomore Kyelar Morrow was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits, striking out two and walking two in outdueling senior and West Virginia University signee Carter Lyles, who struck out 10 and allowed three hits.

LEWIS COUNTY 1, RUSSELL 0: Dylan Hardy scored on a wild pitch in the third inning to lift the Lions (15-16) over the Red Devils (15-18) in the 63rd District Tournament. Seth Wright struck out 12 and walked none in throwing a three-hit shutout. Russell’s Isaac Jenkins struck out 11 and allowed three hits.

Monday’s softball

RACELAND 9, RUSSELL 1: Chloe Collins hit a three-run home run and Rylee Austin smashed a two-run homer to help the Rams (26-10) club the Red Devils (15-18) in the 63rd District tournament. Cameryn Davidson was the winning pitcher. Hannah Wilson went 3 for 4. Emily Johnson drove in two. Haley Thornsberry went 2 for 3 for Russell.

LEWIS COUNTY 2, GREENUP COUNTY 1: Madi Liles’ walkoff infield single in the eighth inning scored Hailey Evans and gave the Lions a victory over the Musketeers in the 63rd District Tournament in Lloyd, Kentucky. Lewis County advances to the 16th Region Tournament for the first time since 2008.
