Eighteen Die in Austrian Bus Crash

January 24, 1999

GRAZ, Austria (AP) _ A bus full of Hungarian students returning from a ski outing went off a road Sunday in southeastern Austria, killing 18 people and injuring 32, Red Cross officials said.

Police said the bus skidded on the road between Trahuetten and Deutschlandsberg, a mountainous region near the border with Slovenia. It went over an embankment and rolled several times.

The cause of the accident was unclear.

The Austria Press Agency said most of the passengers were teen-agers from an agricultural high school Hungary, accompanied by about 15 adults. They were in Austria on a one-week ski vacation, and were heading back from the slopes when the accident occurred.

A Red Cross spokesman, Armin Teichert, said 17 of the injured were seriously hurt, and said ambulances and rescue teams from around the region were called to help.

More information on the victims was not immediately available.
