Tropical Depression forms
MIAMI (AP) _ A tropical depression developed Monday off the Cape Verde islands in the far eastern Atlantic.
At 5 p.m. EDT the depression was centered 250 miles southeast of the southernmost Cape Verdes and was moving at about 12 mph. The storm had maximum sustained winds of about 35 mph, 4 mph below the threshold for a tropical storm and well below hurricane strength of 74 mph, forecasters said.
Forecasters said the storm’s speed was expected to increase and it could pass over the southern part of Cape Verde on Tuesday.
The government of the islands, 350 miles off the African coast, issued a tropical storm warning Monday.
The next named storm of the season would be Debby.
