Heard on the Street: New weight loss program to check into Rochester

September 14, 2018

A well-known name in health care is rolling into the Med City soon as part of a weight-loss franchise.

Rochester native Kevin Mensink is opening a Profile by Sanford office at 1123 Civic Center Drive NW in Barlow Plaza.

The weight-loss center is slated to move into a 2,600-square-foot space along Civic Center Drive that was last occupied by Mega Express Laundry, which moved to another spot in the plaza.

The hope is to have it ready to open for clients by late November. He expects to launch with a team of five with the goal of scaling up to 15 or 16 in the next few years.

The Profile By Sanford weight-loss model is based on three core principles — nutrition, activity and lifestyle.

While Mensink is now working in the medical device industry in the Twin Cities, he said he wanted to launch his new business in his hometown.

“I thought there’s no better way to go back to Rochester to say thank you for everything it has done for me,” he said. “It’s a well-educated market … a health-conscious market.”

Mensink says Profile by Sanford’s program of “real food” combined with personalized coaching caused him to lose 50 pounds in six months.

The franchise is an off-shoot of medical center giant Sanford Health of Sioux Falls, S.D. The program was originally developed as an internal service at Sanford, but now is growing nationally.

Did Mensink have any concerns about bringing a Mayo Clinic competitor into Rochester?

“Not really. The model recognizes the limitations of health care systems … by offering ongoing coaching, ongoing support. In a lot of ways, I think it fits well alongside Mayo Clinic,” he said.
