Fire Kills Mother, Son; Injures Two Others

October 13, 1986

EL MONTE, Calif. (AP) _ A young man who arrived home to find the house afire broke out windows and a door to rescue two younger brothers, but his mother and another brother died, officials said.

Pat Oxenrider, 45, and her 20-year-old son Mark died Sunday in the fire, which fire officials said consumed the three-bedroom house in less than 30 minutes.

Jimmy Oxenrider, 14, was in critical condition at County USC Medical Center, while 5-year-old Andrew was in stable condition at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, hospital officials said. Both were being treated for smoke inhalation.

The boys were rescued after another brother, Ray, 23, arrived about 2:30 a.m.

″I had to bust the door down, and my little brother (Andrew) ran out of the house and hit me in the legs. My friend put him in his car, but it was too hot to go into the house,″ he said.

Oxenrider said he broke all the windows to let the smoke out of the house and then found Jimmy in one of the bedrooms.

″I sprayed my brother inside the house with a hose,″ he said. He was able to keep the flames away until Jimmy was taken out through the window.

″He keeps asking for his mom. I’m not going to tell him, not now anyway,″ Ray Oxenrider said.

The cause of the blaze was unknown.
