Hampton U. 77, Liberty 72

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) _ Al Bell scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Thursday, and Hampton made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold off Liberty 77-72.

The Pirates (5-15) were only 12 of 21 (57 percent) from the line going into the final half-minute. Liberty (9-9) got a jumper by Peter Aluma to cut the Hampton lead to 72-69 with 58 seconds remaining.

Mario Hyman then made two free throws followed by two from JaFonde Williams. In between, Barry Taylor hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 74-72.

Bell broke the string when he missed one of two free throws with :01 remaining.

Williams led the Pirates with 23 points, while Thomas Rogers added 13.

Aluma had 23 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks for the Flames, while Taylor had 16 points, Larry Jackson 14 and Mark Reed 11.

Liberty was hampered by 19 turnovers.
