Melvin C. “Mel” Janssen, 78, of Ashkum, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 13, 2018) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.
He was born Feb. 16, 1940, in Watseka, the son of Clarence and Leona (Borchers) Janssen. His parents preceded him in death.
Mel married Judy Oderwald, in Kankakee, on April 8, 1961.
He farmed in the Ashkum area and worked in quality control for General Foods in Kankakee for more than 20 years.
Mel was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clifton. During his leisure time, he loved to play golf, shoot pool, play cards and go fishing and enjoyed many wonderful years staying warm during the winter in South Texas.
Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years, Judy Janssen; his sons, Mark (Joni) Janssen, of Cartersville, Ga., and Kurt (Kandy) Janssen, of Ashkum; five grandchildren, Matthew (Cymber) Janssen, of Kingston, Ga., Joseph (Kim) Janssen, of Cartersville, Jon Janssen, of Atlanta, David Janssen, of Ashkum, and Jamie Janssen, of Chicago; five great-grandchildren; and brothers-in-law, Jack Oderwald, of Pontiac, and Quenten Schumacher, of Watseka.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clifton, with the Rev. Ray Bowers officiating. Burial will follow in Danforth Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley Zion Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
