Austrian Skier Injures Knee
VIENNA, Austria (AP) _ Austrian skier Werner Franz, runner-up in the 1999 World Cup Super-G standings, injured his knee in a training crash Monday.
Franz, a key member of the Austrian national team, was transported to Schruns, near Innsbruck, for medical examination and treatment, Austrian Ski Federation spokesman Jo Schmid said.
Schmid said the injury could be to either a ligament or the meniscus.
The accident happened in the early afternoon on the glacier region of Soelden, site of the season opening World Cup races over the weekend.
Several national ski teams are training on the glacier, including the Austrian men’s and women’s teams.
Franz finished second in the Super-G World Cup rankings in the 1999 season and won a World Cup Super-G at St. Anton in 2000.
