1 Dead, 5 Injured in Ind. Shooting

November 1, 1999

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) _ Pandemonium broke out at a crowded Halloween party near the Ball State University campus when a group of men who were denied entry returned and fired bullets at the house, killing one man.

Five others were wounded during the shooting early Sunday.

Julian Brown, 28, a former Ball State student, was shot in the chest and died about 30 minutes later at a local hospital.

Witnesses told The Star Press of Muncie that Brown was guarding the door of the two-story house and turned the men away. Police could not confirm that Brown was the doorman.

About 100 people were packed in the house when the shooting started about 4 a.m., police and witnesses said. At least two people fired as many as 40 bullets into the house and police were looking into whether shots were fired from inside the house as well.

The suspects’ identities had not been determined on Sunday.

``When the shots were fired, everyone quickly fell to the ground,″ Jack Smith told the newspaper. ``I saw people jumping out of windows and running for the front door.″

A Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity member from Ball State who rented the house with other students had invited several people over after a fraternity party at the local YWCA, said David Keels, the fraternity’s adviser.

``It was a private gathering,″ he said. ``It wasn’t a wild party or anything like that. It just got out of hand.″
