Penguins Make Offer to Hedberg

July 10, 2001

PITTSBURGH (AP) _ The Pittsburgh Penguins made an initial qualifying contract offer to goalie Johan Hedberg for $583,000 in order to retain his rights.

The 28-year-old Hedberg, a minor leaguer picked up by the Penguins in March and eventually a key player in their playoff run, earned $375,000 last season.

The team has not said whether it will offer Hedberg a more substantial contract.
