Tour Helicopter Crashes off Waikiki Beach; Five Injured
HONOLULU (AP) _ A tour helicopter with five people aboard crashed Sunday in shallow water 150 yards off Waikiki Beach, a Fire Department spokesman said.
Bystanders brought the five people ashore after the Royal Helicopters Inc. aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from a helipad near the Westin Ilikai Hotel, said acting Fire Capt. Charles Tom.
One of the victims, a 27-year-old woman, was reported in guarded condition at Queen’s Medical Center with neck and abdominal injuries, said medical center spokeswoman Rena Ohno.
Queen’s was also treating a man who asked that no information be given out about him, Ms. Ohno said. She would not disclose the two patients’ names, but said both were tourists.
Charles Mormino, 40, was in guarded condition with multiple abrasions and bruises at Straub Hospital, where David Wiedenbeck, 31, was in stable condition with cuts to his hip and arms, said Paula Roth, a spokeswoman who did not know the two men’s hometowns.
The fifth victim, a 41-year-old man, was listed in fair condition at Kuakini Hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Carmen Adams.
The cause of the crash was undetermined and the company could not be reached for comment.
