MIAMI (AP) _ Rick Raether struck out nine batters in four innings Monday to help Miami defeat Virginia, 11-6, in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Atlantic regional baseball tournament.

The victory advanced Miami to the championship round with no defeats in the double-elimination tournament.

As loser, Virginia went on to an afternoon elimination match against Florida. Both teams hade one defeat. The loser of that game is out of the tournament; the winner would have to beat Miami twice to take the regional championship and a berth in the college baseball World Series in Omaha, Neb.

The Miami-Virginia game resumed where it was stopped Sunday because of rain, in the top of the sixth with the score tied 5-5.

Virginia had two runners on base and no outs. Replacing Sunday pitcher Steffen Majer when play resumed, Raether immediately struck out three Virginia hitters in a row, then struck out another in the seventh, three in the eighth and two in the ninth.

″I knew last night when I went home that I would be pitcher today,″ Raether said. ″I thought of several ways I could work my way out but I never thought I could strike out the side.″

Raether, 4-2, picked up the victory for 58-14 Miami. Bob Dement, 3-3, suffered the loss for 38-15 Virginia.
