Accused Priest Dedicated Himself To Helping Youth

September 8, 2018

Editor: I was very angered to read your recent article about the priests in the Scranton Diocese regarding sexual abuse, in particular as it related to the deceased Monsignor Gerald Burns. I want to state here that I and several of my friends had known Monsignor Burns during our high school years and beyond. In fact, he took us to drive-in movies and his cottage at Mountain Lake and never once were any of us touched or abused. He performed my wife’s and my marriage, baptized our two children and officiated our 25th wedding anniversary Mass. Aside from this, he was a true friend of myself and was responsible for getting me into night school at King’s College where I eventually earned a bachelor’s in business administration. Read the article carefully before you make any judgments about a good priest who dedicated himself to the betterment of youth such as myself, an unabused friend. May he rest in peace.
