Bush Nominates Venezuela Ambassador

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Veteran diplomat Charles S. Shapiro is President Bush’s choice to be ambassador to Venezuela.

Shapiro, director of the State Department’s Office of Cuban Affairs since 1999, previously served as deputy chief of mission in Chile and Spain, and as political officer in El Salvador during the Central American turbulence of the mid-1980s.

Shapiro’s nomination, which must be confirmed by the Senate, was announced by the White House on Wednesday.
