ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (AP) _ A woman upset over her 11-year-old daughter's school suspension beat her with a switch and rubbed salt into the bleeding wounds, police said.

Robin C. Henson, 32, was charged Wednesday with felony child abuse by a parent after the girl's aunt notified police. Ms. Henson was freed on $5,000 bond. The girl was placed in her aunt's custody.

She said her mother told her to remove her clothes and lie on the floor, then tied her hands with a telephone cord. She said she was beaten for 10 minutes with a thin, whiplike tree branch with its leaves removed. Her mother went to the kitchen, wet her hands and came back to rub salt in the wounds.

Patrolman M.J. Dlugos said he saw large welts on the back of the girl's legs, as well as on her buttocks and lower back. Some of the welts were bleeding.

Ms. Henson was freed on $5,000 bond.
